 Thug Life is a gripping gangster drama set in the underworld of Delhi. The narrative follows Rangaraya Sakthivel (Kamal Haasan), a seasoned gangster who, during a violent shootout orchestrated by rival gang leader Sadanand, rescues a young boy named Amaran (Silambarasan TR) after his father's death. Sakthivel raises Amaran as his own, setting the stage for a complex tale of loyalty, betrayal, and revenge.

Years later, a series of tragic events, including the suicide of Manickam's daughter due to Sadanand's nephew's betrayal, lead to a chain of retaliations. Sakthivel is imprisoned for murder, and Amaran takes over the gang's operations. Upon Sakthivel's release, tensions rise as he suspects Amaran of orchestrating an assassination attempt against him. Manipulations and revelations culminate in a dramatic confrontation between mentor and protégé, exploring themes of identity, familial bonds, and the cyclical nature of violence.

The collaboration between Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam in Thug Life marks their reunion after the iconic film Nayakan (1987). The film was officially announced in November 2022 under the tentative title Kamal Haasan 234, as it is Haasan's 234th film as a lead actor. Principal photography took place from January to late 2024 across various locations in India, including Chennai, Kanchipuram, Pondicherry, New Delhi, and parts of North India. The film features music composed by A.R. Rahman, cinematography by Ravi K. Chandran, and editing by A. Sreekar Prasad.

  • Ratnam stated that the reason for why it took so long to collaborate, was that they did not find a suitable script for Hasan for years until they recently found one which he co-wrote along with Hasan. After Poniyin Selvan: II released in 2023, Ratnam left to Kodaikanal to write the final script. It took four months for the writing and the pre-production. A muhurat puja was held on 27 October 2023 at the headquarters of Raj Kamal Films International in Chennai. By then, the team began shooting for the promotional teaser, which was completed within three days. The teaser was released on 6 November 2023.
